Description
James E. Pepper 1776 Rye is a straight rye whiskey from the revived James E. Pepper brand. The name looks back to the Pepper family's Kentucky distilling roots, which trace to the late 18th century, and the whiskey is made in the bold, spicy style that rye drinkers prize.
Expect rye grain spice and black pepper up front, with caramel, baking spices and toasted oak behind it, and a lingering, peppery finish. This style tends to be drier and spicier than bourbon. Rye whiskey is made from at least 51 percent rye grain, which gives it a drier, spicier profile than most bourbons.
It makes a lively Manhattan or Sazerac, and is also good sipped neat or over a single large ice cube. A splash of water or a single large cube can open up the aromas, and it pairs well with charcuterie, aged cheese or dark chocolate.
